Custodian Housekeeper Supervisor

General Summary of Duties: The Housekeeper Supervisor provides supervision and coordinates activities of workers engaged in janitorial services while performing a routine cleaning of offices, RTFs, satellite buildings, and public areas. Solves cleaning problems. Assigns custodian work schedules and in coordinating special cleaning jobs with Department Heads while keeping the facilities manager informed of all issues

Supervisory Responsibilities: Housekeepers

Major Responsibilities/Tasks:
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in janitorial services.
  • Assigns janitorial work, and sets priorities daily.
  • Ensure coordination and completion of assigned work by janitorial workers.
  • Inspects work performed to ensure conformance and established standards.
  • Determines the type of chemicals used and keeps the SDS Center on janitorial products current.
  • Determines equipment necessary for specific cleaning tasks, and trains crew on the use of equipment. Submits work requests on equipment in need of repair.
  • Recommends personnel actions, such as hires and discharges, to ensure proper staffing. Documents performance, and conducts annual performance reviews.
  • Confers with staff to resolve production and personnel problems.
  • Trains workers in janitorial methods and procedures and proper operation of equipment
  • Orders supplies and maintains an inventory of supplies. Issues janitorial supplies and equipment to workers to ensure quality and timely delivery of services.
  • Follows fire safety procedures and regulations.
  • Follows all security procedures involved with keeping all facilities secured after duties are completed.
  • Operates cleaning equipment such as scrubbing machines, high-speed buffers, carpet shampooers, or wet and dry vacuums.
  • Identifies cleaning problems and determines appropriate remedies

Minimum Qualifications:

EXPERIENCE: Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)

Two years of recent experience in, housekeeping, janitorial or custodial work.

Preferred Qualifications:

EXPERIENCE: Intermediate (minimum 3 years of job-related experience)

Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle report and reliable, insured transportation

Performance Requirements:

  • Knowledge of materials and methods used to clean and disinfect public facilities.

  • Must be able to work independently and display good organizational skills.
  • Able to write, read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret miscellaneous drawings and schematics.


Demonstrated ability to:
  • Understand safety data sheets and safe chemical handling practices.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc. Maintenance and construction equipment including ATV, backhoe, snowplow, and man lift.

Work Environment: Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.

Mental/Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to function indoors in an office environment and outdoors engaged in physically active work.
  • Ambulatory ability to move to different work locations and bend, stoop, climb, and perform inspections.
  • The ability to wear various protective equipment, work in areas with extreme temperature variation, and work in cramped or uneven spaces.
  • Visual acuity to observe work sites, and read written materials, blueprints, plans, and schematics.
  • Auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone, including projecting voice in noisy work settings.
  • May require the ability to lift from the floor, waist, or overhead objects up to 75 pounds occasion ally.
